But Proton VPN already offers one of the best free VPN tiers in existence — unlimited data, no ads, and an audited no-logs policy. In this guide, we compare Proton VPN Free vs Plus in detail, explain why a “mod” physically cannot grant you Plus access, and show why the official free tier is the smart move.

What is Proton VPN?

Features

Latest Updates

Installation Guide

Benefits

Comparison

Frequently Asked Questions

Conclusion

What is this app?

Proton VPN is a VPN service from the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, built with an explicit focus on privacy and transparency. Its apps are open source, its no-logs policy has been independently audited, and it is based in Switzerland under strong privacy laws. Unusually, its free tier is genuinely useful: unlimited data, no ads, no speed throttling games — just fewer servers and no streaming support.

A Proton VPN MOD APK claims to unlock Plus features for free. This cannot work: Plus features like Secure Core servers, streaming-optimized servers, and 10Gbps speeds are provisioned on Proton’s infrastructure for paying accounts. Your account tier is checked server-side every time you connect. A modified app cannot change your account tier on Proton’s servers — it can only lie to you locally while potentially sending your traffic somewhere it should not go.

Features

What Proton VPN officially offers, split by tier:

Free tier: Unlimited data, servers in multiple countries, medium speeds, one VPN connection, no ads, and the same audited no-logs policy as paid users.

Plus tier: 10Gbps servers in 60+ countries, streaming service support, Secure Core multi-hop routing, NetShield ad-blocker, up to 10 simultaneous connections, and P2P/torrenting support.

Open-source apps: All apps are open source and independently audited — transparency you can verify yourself.

Strong jurisdiction: Based in Switzerland with strict privacy laws protecting users.

What mods claim: “Plus unlocked.” Server-side enforcement makes this impossible; the mod can display a fake “Plus” badge while your connection still uses free-tier servers — if it connects at all.

Latest Updates

Proton VPN updates its official apps frequently with new features like improved WireGuard support, expanded server networks, and interface refinements — and because the apps are open source, anyone can inspect what changed. Modded builds cannot offer this transparency: they are closed, anonymous repackages, usually outdated, with no way to verify what was added or removed.

Installation Guide

Get the real free tier in minutes:

Open the Google Play Store and search for “Proton VPN.”

Confirm the developer is Proton AG and tap Install.

Open the app and create a free Proton account (you can use it for Proton Mail too).

Choose the Free plan when offered — no payment details required.

Pick one of the free server locations and tap Connect.

Confirm Android’s VPN permission prompt, and you are protected with unlimited free data.

Benefits

Truly unlimited free data: No monthly caps, no throttling tricks — rare among free VPNs.

Audited privacy: Independent audits and open-source code mean the no-logs claim is verifiable.

No account games: The free tier requires no payment method and shows no ads.

Upgrade path: If you later want streaming or Secure Core, upgrading to Plus is one tap — legitimately.

Comparison

Proton VPN Free vs Plus: Free gives you unlimited data on a smaller server set at medium speeds — plenty for secure browsing on public Wi-Fi. Plus adds blazing 10Gbps servers, streaming unblocking, Secure Core double-hop routing, and torrenting support. The jump is real, but so is the enforcement: only paying accounts get Plus servers.

Proton VPN Free vs. a “Plus mod”: The mod cannot give you Plus servers, period. What it can give you is malware and traffic interception. The official free tier, meanwhile, gives you unlimited private browsing with audited protections. Compare that with Windscribe’s 10GB free plan if you want faster speeds in exchange for a data cap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Proton VPN MOD APK unlock Plus for free?

No. Plus access is controlled by Proton’s servers based on your account.
